David E. Farrer (Class of 1964)

Master Sergeant David E. Farrer was pinned by Major General John L. Matthews, both Bingham High School graduates.

On March 9, 1990, David E. Farrer, by order of the Governor of the State of Utah, was awarded the Utah National Guard Commendation Medal for meritorious achievement. It is amazing to note that not only is David a graduate of Bingham High School, but he was pinned and presented the award by Major General John L. Matthews, who also is a graduate of Bingham High.  This award was given because while serving as Crew Chief of the 151st Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, Master Sergeant Farrer’s decisive actions, quick thinking, and efficient manner contributed immeasurably to saving an extremely valuable Air National Guard Aircraft and the lives of the crew and ground personnel. During the engine start, the KC-135E tanker aircraft burst into a ball of flames and smoke erupted from engine number 4. This tanker was from the 1950’s and is very valuable to the National Guard.  Without regard for personal safety, Master Sergeant Farrer initiated action, marshaled the resources at hand, and quickly brought a potentially tragic situation under control.
