5A boys’ basketball: Bingham rallies past Lone Peak to repeat as state champs
Ogden • Dason Youngblood was left by his lonesome in the open court. The high-flying guard known for his ability to play above the rim despite his diminutive stature passed on the opportunity to throw it down in favor of the more secure layup.
Bingham was on the verge of blowing open the Class 5A state boys’ basketball championship at Weber State University at the juncture, so the safer play was more logical. However, when Youngblood found himself in the exact scenario moments later Saturday, the senior rose to the occasion and hammered down a two-handed dunk that sent the blue-painted student section into a frenzy.
It was the beginning of the end as the Miners were able to close out Lone Peak with relative ease from there to claim their second consecutive title with the 49-42 win.
“They’re all sweet,” Bingham coach Jake Schroeder said. “I’ve been really spoiled with great players, great school, great coaches around me. It’s sweet.”
Youngblood finished with 11 points and was named to the all-tournament team.
“It’s amazing. It’s the best day of my life,” said Bingham’s Lleyton Parker, who was named the tournament MVP. “I can’t tell between last year and this year, which one I like more,” Parker said. “It’s the best feeling I’ve ever had.”
Bingham (24-3) outscored the Knights (23-5) 23-9 in the fourth quarter, including reeling off 12 consecutive points highlighted by six quick points from Brayden Cosper, who finished with nine points.
“That’s kind of been our M.O. all year,” Schroeder said. “For whatever reason, the fourth quarter all year has been good for us, so I knew we could do it. I don’t know how many stops in a row we got, but we knew if we could keep the score down and make them shoot a low percentage, we’d have a chance.”
The championship is the 10th all-time in boys’ basketball for Bingham.
“It’s a little bit of Miner magic, I guess,” Parker said. “We just want it so much. Every day we come out and grind.”
